Movie of the Week << Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Heyyy People!

I am very very excited to talk about this week’s movie, since I enjoyed it a lot, even though at first I was not very sure if I liked it or not, because I could not understand the ending. But when I figured it out, it all made perfect sense, and I ended up with a whole different perspective on the movies and its characters.

Title: Nocturnal Animals

Release Date: 2016

Genre: Drama, Thriller

Starring: Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Armie Hammer, aaron Taylor Johnson

Director: Tom Ford

Duration: 1h 56m

Summary: Susan (Amy Adams) is a wealthy art gallery owner that is very unhappry with her second husband and has completely lost the meaning of her life. Suddenly, one day she receives an unexpected gift from her ex-husband, a novel that is dedicated to her and while she reads it, not she has to come to terms with her past, but she slowly realises that revenge is coming her way…

Likes/Dislikes (may contain spoilers): First, I want to say how nice this movie is directed. The pictures were good, the music was very effective when it needed to show suspence and the scenery in general was very pleasing to the eye. Also, I loved the montages, where we were seeing Susan and Tony doing similar actions.

As far as the story goes, I found it very interesting, because the movie follows two stories: the main one with Susan as the protagonist and the story of the novel, where Edward’s alter ego, Tony (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the protagonist. I have to admit that if Edward’s novel was on sale, I would definitely buy it, because its story was very captivating, yet heartbreaking and creepy at the same time.

Susan ans Edward were two very different people that fell in love in their teens and when they were reunited as adults, their romance bloomed again. In this relationship, I believe Susan was the coward one, because she was raised in a certain way and when things got difficult, she immediately backed away and ended up with a husband as cold as ice. Edward loved her a lot, but his love seemed not enough for her and he was heartbroken by the way she abandoned him.

The point of the whole movie is revenge. We watch two different types of revenge though and that is what makes this movie so smart. First, we see Tony’s revenge, which is violent and brutal and the end he even loses himself in the process and on the other hand, we have Edward’s revenge, which is very powerful as he manages to tear her down without even meeting her in person, he justs leaves her waiting for him, letting her contemplate how miserable her life is.

This is the end of today’s post, I really liked this movie and I hope that you will like too, if you end up watching it!
